Islanders Invited to Shape a New Vision for Gorey Pier

Residents in Jersey are being encouraged to share their ideas on the future appearance of Gorey Pier as plans move forward to create a unified design for the popular coastal spot.

A new “design code” is being developed to ensure consistency across public features such as benches, lamp-posts and litter bins, which currently vary depending on which authority manages different sections of the area.

Gorey resident Jennifer Bridge said the lack of coordination has resulted in a patchwork effect along the pier and surrounding promenade.

She explained that responsibility for the pier itself lies with Ports of Jersey, while the area stretching from the Dolphin pub towards the promenade falls under the Government’s Infrastructure department.

As a result, she said, small but noticeable differences have emerged.

“One side has black bins, the other blue bins. Some lamp-posts are black, others have blue lighting,” she said. “You can start to see the issue we’re trying to address.”

A community drop-in workshop is being held on Tuesday evening, 3 March, giving islanders the opportunity to contribute their views on how the area should look in the years ahead.

According to Ms Bridge, parts of Gorey Pier have begun to appear worn due to the mix of street furniture and styles.

“The area has started to look a bit tired with this mish-mash of bins, lamps and benches,” she said. “Residents put a huge amount of effort into maintaining their properties - the buildings are freshly painted and look fantastic. Then you lift your eyes and see the castle, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks.”

She added that the aim is to create a clear blueprint that will bring harmony to the pier’s overall look and feel, enhancing the setting for both locals and visitors.

The workshop will take place at St Martin’s Public Hall from 5.30pm to 7.00pm.
