The Jersey Chamber of Commerce has launched a fierce response after planning officers advised against approving the proposed Strive hotel development in St Peter.
Plans lodged in August outline a hotel, spa, conference venue and pool complex beside Strive Health Club near the Airport Road, with the ambition of creating a “sports, leisure and cultural destination” to support a wide range of community activity.
The proposal drew early praise from islanders who welcomed the idea of a high-quality hotel close to the airport, a boost to jobs in the west of the island, and a potential easing of commuter traffic heading east.
However, a planning officer’s report has branded the scheme “overly dominant and imposing” with a “harmful impact on the character of the countryside.” It also argues the scheme shows “limited evidence of public benefit or contribution to local sport” despite recognising the economic positives.
Further concerns highlighted include traffic pressures, flood risk, effects on protected wildlife and suggestions that the residential element does not meet housing standards.
Chamber President Lee Maddan condemned the recommendation, calling it “frankly ridiculous” and saying he was “aghast” at the stance. He stressed the project enjoys backing from Visit Jersey, Jersey Sport, the Government’s Economy Department and Jersey Rugby Club.
“We need to tackle over-regulation and embrace a can-do mindset,” Maddan said. “The days of progress being blocked by outdated policy and subjective opinion should be thrown out with tomorrow’s rubbish.”
The Planning Committee is set to make its final decision on Thursday 6 November.
