Islanders urged to put safety first this Bonfire Night

Jersey Fire and Rescue is urging islanders to take extra precautions when celebrating Bonfire Night on 5 November, reminding the public that fireworks and bonfires can pose serious safety risks.
The service has issued a series of safety guidelines, including buying fireworks only from reputable retailers and checking they carry recognised CE or UKCA safety markings.
Islanders are also reminded never to give fireworks to anyone under 18, follow the Firework Code and avoid attempting to relight fireworks that fail to ignite.
Alcohol should be kept away from anyone responsible for lighting fireworks or bonfires. Sparklers should be lit individually, with users wearing gloves and children under five never being allowed to handle them.
Used fireworks should be soaked in water for at least 24 hours before disposal, while pets should be kept indoors and neighbours informed ahead of any planned displays.
Station Commander Chris Smith warned that bonfires must be positioned well away from buildings, fences, vehicles and other flammable materials.
He also stressed that petrol, diesel and other accelerants should never be used to start or revive a fire, as they can cause unpredictable and dangerous flare-ups.
Mr Smith encouraged residents to consider the impact of fireworks on pets, livestock and vulnerable people who may be distressed by loud noises.
He added that sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures and should be treated with the same caution as fireworks. Children must be supervised, and used sparklers should be placed in water once they have cooled.
The JSPCA has also published guidance to help owners protect their pets during the fireworks season.
Those planning bonfires are being urged to check carefully for hedgehogs and other wildlife before lighting them.
Islanders are encouraged to attend organised displays, including the St Martin's Bonfire on Saturday 7 November, which will raise funds for FREEDA, Acorn Enterprises and Caring Cooks.
Meanwhile, a public consultation on future fireworks regulations is due to open in December.
Residents who want to be notified when the consultation launches can email fireworks@gov.je with 'Yes' in the subject line.
