Men across Jersey are being encouraged to sport a moustache this month as part of the annual Movember campaign, which aims to shine a spotlight on men’s mental health and challenge the stigma surrounding health conversations.
The global initiative, now underway, inspires supporters to raise funds and awareness by growing moustaches — but the charity says the movement is about far more than facial hair.
Local residents are being invited to take part in a range of activities to show their support, whether or not they can grow a moustache. Adan Freeman, speaking on behalf of Movember, said there are plenty of ways to get involved.
“We’re asking people to ‘Host a Mo-ment”
“We’re asking people to ‘Host a Mo-ment’ — that could be a coffee morning, drinks after work, or any opportunity to bring people together and highlight men’s mental health,” he explained. “Men who feel isolated or disconnected are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other serious health issues, and often feel they can’t ask for help.”
Freeman emphasised the importance of opening up: “We want men, their families, and their friends to have conversations that could make a real difference — even save a life.”
Another key initiative, ‘Move for Mental Health’, encourages islanders to collectively complete 60km in November — a distance chosen to honour the 60 men lost to suicide every hour globally. Participants can meet the challenge through daily walks, runs, or longer activities throughout the month.
“We’re losing too many men far too young,” Freeman said. “Talking openly can be hard for men, and as a result many face health struggles without support. Movember is about changing that.”
More information about how to take part can be found on the Movember website.
