Innovative Islanders set to benefit from global IP protection under treaty extension
The Times Jersey, 4 February 2026
Innovators and businesses in Jersey are set to gain easier access to international intellectual property protection after the States Assembly approved a request to extend key global treaties to the Island.
Under the proposal, Jersey will be able to join international registration systems run by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), allowing trademarks, patents and industrial designs to be protected in multiple jurisdictions worldwide through a single application.
The move follows the Assembly’s approval of P.117/2025, which asks the UK to extend four major international intellectual property treaties to Jersey. Once in place, the extension will significantly simplify the process for local entrepreneurs and companies seeking to safeguard their ideas overseas.
The initiative has been led by Deputy Moz Scott, Assistant Minister for External Relations, as part of a wider effort to modernise Jersey’s intellectual property framework.
Deputy Scott said the changes would bring tangible benefits to the Island’s economy. “I welcome the continued support of States Members for the modernisation of Jersey’s intellectual property protection system,” she said. “This will help deliver a key Common Strategic Policy priority to support the Island’s economic wellbeing by reducing red tape, enhancing opportunities for businesses, and strengthening Jersey’s international reputation.”
The treaty extension is expected to make Jersey a more attractive base for innovative and creative enterprises, while aligning the Island more closely with international best practice in intellectual property protection.
