Emergency Teams Work Together in Two-Hour Cliffside Rescue at Grosnez

Multiple emergency service teams joined forces on Thursday morning to rescue an injured person stranded on rocks above the sea at Grosnez, Jersey. The operation took nearly two hours and involved a complex, coordinated response.

According to the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (JFRS), crews worked alongside the Jersey Coastguard, police, paramedics, and the RNLI due to the challenging location of the incident.

Station Commander Mark Bailey-Walker explained that the casualty was eventually lifted up the cliff in a basket stretcher and transferred to hospital. “This incident was complex, and the rescue took almost two hours from the first phone call to the casualty being handed over to paramedics,” he said.

The alarm was raised around 11:00 BST when a member of the public contacted police after spotting the person stuck on the rocks, unable to climb back to the headland.

JFRS deployed a rope rescue team, 10 firefighters, and a rescue unit. They were supported by honorary police, the ambulance service, and the RNLI. HMS Tyne remained offshore in case further assistance was required, and a helicopter from Cherbourg was placed on standby.

A photo taken from the top of the cliff shows nine emergency workers in high-visibility gear and helmets gathered between rocky outcrops, with a lifeboat visible in the choppy sea below.

Mr Bailey-Walker praised the collaborative effort: “Multi-agency collaborative working was essential to the safe and successful resolution of this incident.”
