Channel Islands Issue Hot Weather Guidance as Temperatures Set to Soar

Governments in the Channel Islands have issued public health guidance as forecasters predict temperatures could climb above 30°C (86°F) in the coming days.

Professor Peter Bradley, Jersey’s Director of Public Health, urged residents to take steps to stay cool and safe during the anticipated heatwave, particularly over the weekend.

“With temperatures possibly exceeding 30°C on Saturday, those attending outdoor events should be especially cautious,” Prof Bradley said.

Guernsey’s Public Health Services echoed the warning, advising islanders to “stay safe, cool, and well” during the period of hot weather.

Health Risks and Safety Tips

Authorities in both Jersey and Guernsey recommended several measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illness: wear a hat, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoid direct sunlight between midday and 6pm, when the sun is at its strongest.

“While we welcome the warm weather, extreme heat can negatively impact health, leading to conditions such as heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration,” Prof Bradley explained. “I encourage all islanders attending events this weekend to take appropriate precautions.”

Public health officials also urged people to look out for those most vulnerable to heat—such as older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions—ensuring they remain cool and well-hydrated.

“Spending time outdoors is enjoyable for many,” a Guernsey Public Health Services spokesperson said, “but it’s important to be mindful of the health risks high temperatures can pose, especially for those in at-risk groups.”
