Channel Islands strengthen regional ties at political summits in Brittany and Ille-et-Vilaine
Representatives from Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark attended this week’s annual political summits with the regional council of Brittany and the departmental council of Ille-et-Vilaine.
The meetings reinforced long-standing partnerships between the Channel Islands and their French neighbours, built through Memorandums of Understanding — Jersey’s dating back 15 years with Ille-et-Vilaine and a renewed MoU with Brittany signed by both islands in 2023.
Discussions in Dinard and Rennes covered topics such as renewable energy, maritime transport, youth mobility, culture, and economic development, highlighting shared goals for sustainable regional cooperation.
Jersey’s Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said:
“The Brittany Summit has been an invaluable opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation in recent years. Political relations between Jersey and Brittany are strong and there was a desire at the summit on both sides to take concrete steps towards developing business, sporting and cultural links.
These links will forge even closer relations as we seek to encourage sustainable growth across our jurisdictions.”
The summits concluded with commitments to deepen collaboration across maritime, cultural, and educational projects in the coming year.
