Jersey Cuts GST Refund Threshold to Attract Tourist Shoppers

In a move aimed at boosting tourism spending, the Government of Jersey has lowered the minimum purchase amount required for visitors to reclaim Goods and Services Tax on their shopping.

Starting in July, tourists will be able to claim a GST refund on purchases of £100 or more made from the same retailer on the same day—down from the previous threshold of £250.

The initiative is part of Jersey’s broader Visitor Economy Strategy and will be supported by a digital upgrade. Self-service kiosks will be installed at the island’s airport and harbour, streamlining the refund process for departing visitors.

The government is collaborating with global tax-free shopping provider Global Blue to roll out the system. The firm says the revised policy is designed to enhance Jersey’s appeal as a high-end retail destination.

"This reflects a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term growth for local retailers," Global Blue said in a statement, adding that it hopes the service will drive increased tourist spending.

The scheme covers a range of goods, including fashion, cosmetics, watches, jewellery, and leather items. To qualify, visitors must present a passport and leave Jersey within 31 days of the purchase.

Global Blue also plans to launch a mobile app tailored for frequent travelers and a customer care service to assist first-time users.

Derrick Hardman, Regional COO of Global Blue, described the initiative as a “milestone” for Jersey’s retail and tourism landscape. “We’re proud to support the island in unlocking its full potential on the global stage,” he said.
