Jersey Women Seek UK Care Amid Local Health Gaps
A Jersey GP says more women are travelling to the UK for specialist treatment due to a lack of local expertise in conditions like urinary incontinence and endometriosis.
Dr Jessica Langtree-Marsh from the Women's Health Hub said while access to general healthcare is fairly easy, specialist care remains limited, forcing many to pay privately or self-fund treatment off-island. "We’re seeing more and more people travel off-island," she said, citing long waiting lists and a shortage of experts in women’s health.
Her comments come ahead of a public hearing where Health Minister Deputy Tom Binet will face questions from politicians. He acknowledged gaps in care and said progress depends on additional funding.
The issue follows the government’s decision to scrap a dedicated women’s health strategy last year, a move criticised by campaigners like Debbie Taylor of Soroptimists Jersey, who called it “a real shame” and urged for a unified approach to women’s healthcare.
