Government funding of new hub concern for deputy

A Jersey deputy has raised concerns about the government’s use of £91m from the Social Security Reserve Fund to purchase its new headquarters in Union Street, which opened on 9 December.

Deputy Max Andrews, one of seven politicians who opposed the move during last month's budget debate, argued the fund should be safeguarded for islanders' pensions, particularly as Jersey faces an ageing population. He questioned the need for a new office amid changing work habits and suggested external borrowing as an alternative.

Treasury Minister Deputy Elaine Millar defended the decision, calling it a “very good transaction.” She said the building purchase aligns with the fund's objectives, providing a reliable rental income and retaining value. Millar added that the move had been independently reviewed.

Retired States employees Louise Jackson and Jill Charlton expressed concerns over the project's high costs, questioning whether it was a waste of public money given prior department relocations.
