Structural Survey Work to Begin at Gorey Pier Following Storm Damage

Essential structural assessments are scheduled to begin at Gorey Pier in St Martin after signs of damage were uncovered. Subject to final planning approval from the Government of Jersey, work is expected to commence on Tuesday, 27 May.

The inspection follows a recent report highlighting structural cracks in the historic pier—attributed to age-related wear and the impact of Storm Ciarán in November 2023. Specialist contractors from Terra Firma will carry out the work over a period of four to six weeks.

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said efforts would be made to “minimise disruption” and complete the survey before the height of the summer season.

“This investigation is crucial to assess the condition of the pier and will guide the approach for future stabilisation works,” they said.

Survey work will include opening trial pits and boreholes across various parts of the structure, including the pier arm, head, and harbour-facing base wall. However, no work is planned in the bulwark area, where local restaurants and residential properties are situated.

Future repair plans include replacing the concrete landing deck, reinforcing structural walls, fixing cracks in the pier road, and removing the existing terminal building.

Work has been timed to align with spring tides—expected to drop to 1.35 metres—allowing for low-tide access. Water management systems will be used to control any ingress during high tide.

Temporary restrictions on vehicle access, public walkways, and parking spaces are anticipated throughout the project.
