Jersey Zoo Welcomes Endangered Giant Otter Pair
A mother-and-daughter duo of giant otters have arrived at their new home in Jersey Zoo, marking an exciting addition to the Trinity-based wildlife sanctuary.
The pair, named Alexandra and Fia, were transferred from Yorkshire Wildlife Park and are now settling into the zoo’s South American House.
Giant otters are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, with populations threatened by habitat loss, water pollution, and illegal hunting.
Zoo officials expressed their enthusiasm, saying they were “delighted” to welcome the otters, and highlighted the species’ distinctive features — including their long, muscular tails and strong swimming abilities.
The zoo hopes Alexandra and Fia will help raise awareness of the conservation challenges facing this rare and charismatic species.
