Free Dementia Care Training Sessions Offered to Jersey Carers
Carers across Jersey are being invited to take part in a free training programme designed to support those looking after people with dementia.
The initiative, led by Dementia Jersey, consists of four flexible sessions available in either the morning or evening, allowing carers to choose a time that suits their schedule. The training offers practical guidance, tools, and strategies to help carers better understand and manage the challenges of dementia care. Participants will learn how to identify common symptoms and use effective communication techniques tailored to the condition.
Claudine Snape, CEO of Dementia Jersey, explained that the programme takes a hands-on, empathetic approach.
“Our training is all about giving carers the practical tools they need—not just to support those they’re caring for, but also to look after their own well-being,” she said. “We focus a lot on managing stress and recognising personal responses, which are just as important.”
A key part of the training includes an immersive simulation that helps participants experience the world from the perspective of someone living with dementia.
“We use props to create sensory challenges—like muffled hearing, blurred vision, or difficulty with touch—to help carers understand just how disorienting and frustrating everyday tasks can become,” Snape added. “Something as simple as buttoning a shirt can feel impossible.”
The programme aims to build empathy and resilience among carers, ensuring they’re better equipped both emotionally and practically.
