Visitors at Jersey Zoo have two new reasons to celebrate after the arrival of a pair of baby capybaras.

The zoo announced that its capybara family has grown, sharing the news that there are now “not one, but two babybara” at the attraction.

Proud parents Tayto and Tango are now looking after their latest offspring, with the newest baby born on Wednesday 10 June after Tayto gave birth.

Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents and are native to South America. They are semi-aquatic animals and are often compared to oversized guinea pigs because of their appearance and gentle nature.

The new arrivals come after Tango became a talking point last year when he briefly escaped from his enclosure, leading to a temporary closure of parts of the zoo. He was later found exploring woodland within the zoo grounds.

Tango was one of three capybara siblings who arrived at Jersey Zoo from Drusillas Park, where he famously caught the attention of author Jacqueline Wilson after seeking cuddles during a World Book Day visit.

The zoo’s newest additions are expected to delight animal lovers as they begin exploring their surroundings with their parents.
