PFAS Found in Agricultural Sprays in Jersey
At least four agricultural sprays in Jersey, including one used on potato crops, contain PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," according to Environment Minister Steve Luce.
In the States Assembly, Luce faced questions about efforts to reduce PFAS contamination in the island’s water and environment. He stated that discussions were underway to find alternatives and halt the use of these sprays as soon as possible.
PFAS, previously leaked from firefighting foam near the airport in the 1990s, have been linked to potential health risks. A 2024 report by the PFAS Scientific Advisory Panel highlighted concerns about elevated cholesterol levels and possible links to kidney and testicular cancer. The panel has recommended therapeutic phlebotomy to reduce PFAS levels in affected individuals.
