Concerns over misuse of alcohol - survey

Survey Highlights Concerns Over Alcohol Use in Jersey and Guernsey

A recent report has revealed that more than half of respondents in a survey on alcohol consumption in Jersey and Guernsey expressed concerns about high consumption levels and anti-social behaviour.

The survey, conducted by Island Global Research, gathered responses from 1,264 Jersey residents and 1,393 Guernsey residents between October and November 2024.

Concerns Over Anti-Social Behaviour

In Jersey, 53% of respondents identified anti-social behaviour as their primary concern related to alcohol consumption. Similarly, 55% of Guernsey respondents shared this concern.

Additionally, 56% of participants in Jersey and 52% in Guernsey felt that more measures were needed to reduce alcohol-related harm.

Health and Cost Issues

The survey also highlighted other key concerns, including the strain on healthcare systems. In Jersey, 38% of respondents were very concerned about the financial burden of alcohol-related health issues, while in Guernsey, this figure was 35%.

Concerns about the personal health impact of excessive alcohol consumption were also noted, with 31% of Jersey respondents and 26% in Guernsey expressing serious worries.

The Role of Education

Despite these concerns, the survey found broad acceptance of moderate alcohol consumption. In Jersey, 91% of respondents said drinking in moderation was socially acceptable, while 92% in Guernsey agreed.

Several participants emphasized the need for education over regulatory measures. One Jersey resident commented: “I think education is key. If people drink alcohol excessively, adding labelling or limiting pricing and promotions will not stop that.”

A Guernsey respondent pointed out the link between nightlife culture and problematic behaviour, saying, “Nightlife culture is very much associated with alcohol consumption and consequently socially unacceptable behaviour by a significant minority.”

The findings highlight both widespread concern and strong opinions on how best to address alcohol-related issues across the islands.
