Charity and M&S Join Forces to Ease School Uniform Costs

A Jersey charity has partnered with retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) to help families manage the rising cost of school uniforms.

Through the initiative, parents who donate used school uniforms to Autism Jersey’s boutique shop receive a 10% discount voucher for purchasing new uniforms at M&S.

The scheme arrives at a critical time, as many families across the island report increased financial pressures. Unlike the UK, where state schools require a maximum of three compulsory uniform items, Jersey schools can require up to five — significantly raising the cost for parents.

Sonja Meacock, who manages Autism Jersey’s shop and is a mother of two, highlighted the impact:

“Everyone is struggling at the moment… Many parents are choosing between feeding their children and buying school uniforms.” “Uniforms are essential — they help children feel comfortable in class — but it can cost £100 to £200 per child at secondary school level.”

While the island’s Education Department has been asked for comment, no response has yet been received.

Lesley Harrison, also from Autism Jersey and co-organiser of the campaign, hopes to expand the project:

“There’s real pressure on families. This offer is proving popular, and we’d love to see more retailers get involved. It could become a regular fixture.”

The current voucher scheme is available until 27 September.
