A local man is set to turn heads on the fairway as he dons a wedding dress for part of a 24-hour charity golf challenge in support of Cancer Research UK Jersey.
Ollie Spry will be taking on a sunrise-to-sunset golfing marathon at La Moye Golf Club, combining serious fundraising with some light-hearted antics. Among the eccentric twists planned for the day, Mr Spry will swap traditional golf clubs for quirky alternatives – including a croquet mallet and even a frying pan.
“It’s all about having a bit of fun and creating a buzz to raise as much awareness as possible,” he said.
Spry’s motivation is deeply personal: “I’ve seen cancer change the lives of people I care about. Their strength inspired me to take on something big. That’s why I’m doing this – to raise money and fight for a future without cancer.”
In the run-up to the event, passers-by in St Helier may have spotted him near Charing Cross dressed in full bridal gear, promoting the fundraiser. “It definitely gets attention,” he laughed. “People ask, ‘Why are you wearing that?’ – and that opens the door to talk about the cause.”
Having already raised more than £2,000, Spry is aiming for a £5,000 total by the end of the challenge.
He added: “Jersey’s community spirit is amazing. Everyone gets behind these causes, and it’s a real privilege to be part of that.”
The event takes place this Friday and promises a mix of fun, fundraising, and a heartfelt mission to support cancer research.
