Sale of Aviemore Site to Jersey Development Company Goes Ahead

A proposal to halt the sale of the former Aviemore care facility in St Martin to the Jersey Development Company (JDC) has been unsuccessful. As a result, the site will be sold for an initial £1.3 million.

Deputy Alex Curtis had sought to pause the transaction to allow for public consultation on the future use of the land. However, States members rejected the proposal, with 29 voting against it, 13 in favour, and three abstaining.

During the debate, ministers outlined JDC’s plans to construct up to ten three-bedroom homes on the site. They emphasised that, once planning permission is secured, the value of the sale could rise to £2.5 million, despite the land being listed for offers over £3 million.

Several politicians highlighted the pressing need for housing, arguing that the development would provide much-needed homes for islanders. The Infrastructure Minister also stressed that selling to JDC represented the best value for taxpayers and warned against further delays.

Funds from the sale will be allocated to support care leavers.
