Islanders are being encouraged to swap car journeys for healthier and more sustainable ways of travelling as Better Journeys Week gets under way across Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Running from 18 to 22 May, the annual campaign aims to inspire people to reconsider how they travel to work or school, with organisers promoting walking, cycling, public transport and other active forms of transport.

This year’s theme, “Don’t just commute: CONNECT!”, focuses on encouraging people to engage more with their surroundings and local communities rather than viewing travel as simply part of the daily routine.

Campaign organisers say making small changes to commuting habits can have significant benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing. They argue that avoiding traffic congestion and parking pressures can help people start the day in a more positive frame of mind.

Rollo de Sausmarez said active travel could improve both health and productivity.

“It has incredible health benefits,” he said.

“What you find is that people also do better work if they have had a more active start to the day.

“You’re not just sitting in a box. You are experiencing the beautiful place we live in, connecting with it and connecting with others.”

Supporters of the initiative say everyday journeys can become more enjoyable and meaningful when people take time to slow down and travel differently.

Jen Watson, whose company sponsors the campaign, said commuting was often something people did automatically without much thought.

“What’s great about Better Journeys Week is that it encourages people to pause and see that time differently,” she said.

“Whether it’s getting some fresh air, clearing your head or simply slowing down, those everyday journeys can actually become something to look forward to.”
