Family-Run Portuguese Restaurant to Close After 30 Years in Jersey

Barros’ Tropical Bistro is set to close its doors in December 2025, marking the end of three decades serving the island’s community.

The family-run Portuguese restaurant first opened on Colomberie in 1995 before relocating to its current spot on the corner of David Place, where it has remained ever since.

Manager and chef Michelle de Barros has confirmed that the closure comes as a result of the building’s lease expiring. After years in the hospitality industry, she plans to take time away from the business to focus on her family.

Michelle grew up around the restaurant, helping her parents from a young age and officially taking over the reins in 2010 to continue her father’s legacy. Over the years, Barros’ Tropical Bistro has built a loyal customer base and become a well-loved fixture in Jersey’s dining scene.

Reflecting on the current hospitality landscape, Michelle noted that rising costs have made the sector increasingly challenging. However, she believes that recent legal changes, including adjustments around drinks promotions, represent positive progress for local businesses.

Despite the difficulties, she remains optimistic about Jersey’s food scene, highlighting the island’s wide range of dining options and the steady stream of new venues opening.

Barros’ Tropical Bistro will serve its final meals on 20 December 2025, bringing to a close a much-loved chapter in Jersey’s culinary history.
