Police and support organisations in Jersey and Guernsey are encouraging anyone affected by domestic abuse to seek help during this summer's FIFA World Cup, amid concerns that major sporting events can coincide with an increase in incidents.

The States of Jersey Police said officers would work closely with Jersey Domestic Abuse Support (JDAS) throughout the tournament, which begins on 11 June and concludes on 19 July across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The force said it would use intelligence-led policing to identify and disrupt potential incidents before they occur, while also raising public awareness of domestic abuse and available support services.

Acting Chief Inspector Aiden Quenault said factors such as heightened emotions and increased alcohol or drug consumption during major sporting events can contribute to a rise in domestic abuse cases.

"Domestic abuse in any form is unacceptable," he said.

"We continue to work alongside partner agencies to assess risk, support victims and ensure offenders are held accountable. This collaboration is vital in protecting vulnerable people and preventing further harm."

JDAS Service Manager Sarah Hamon acknowledged that seeking help can be challenging for victims but stressed that support is available.

"Our message is simple: you are not alone," she said. "Help is available for anyone who needs it."

In Guernsey, domestic abuse charity Safer has also highlighted the importance of seeking assistance. The organisation said that while alcohol may contribute to unpredictable behaviour, it should never be viewed as a justification for abuse.

Safer's Chief Executive, Naomi Wright, said responsibility for abusive behaviour rests solely with the perpetrator.

"We need to challenge unacceptable behaviour before it escalates," she said. "A strong community response can make a real difference, and that is a message for people of all ages."

The World Cup's opening match will take place in Mexico City on 11 June, with the final scheduled for 19 July in New Jersey.
