Mark Temple Appointed Jersey’s Deputy Bailiff

Attorney General Mark Temple has been appointed as Jersey’s new deputy bailiff, a move approved by King Charles III and formally announced in the States Assembly.

Mr Temple succeeds Robert MacRae, who welcomed the appointment, noting that his successor “has served the island as a law officer for 10 years and I have every confidence that his experience and attributes will serve him well as a judge of the Royal Court and a presiding officer of the States Assembly.”

“Has served the island as a law officer for 10 years and I have every confidence that his experience and attributes will serve him well as a judge of the Royal Court and a presiding officer of the States Assembly.”

Describing the appointment as a “great honour,” Mr Temple said he looked forward to supporting the work of the bailiff and the Bailiff’s Chambers, collaborating with the jurats of the Royal Court, States members, and the Judicial and States Greffe.

The deputy bailiff plays a central role in Jersey’s judicial system, presiding over cases in the Royal Court alongside the bailiff or commissioners, and contributing to the administration of the States Assembly.

Mr Temple moved to Jersey in 2003 and was admitted as an advocate in 2005. He became an accredited mediator and specialised in litigation and dispute resolution during his private practice. In 2015, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel).

He served as the island’s solicitor general between 2015 and 2020 before taking up the role of attorney general.
