Jersey Shelter Seeks New Homes for Abandoned Snakes

A Jersey animal shelter is appealing to reptile lovers to open their homes to six snakes currently in its care — including Ivy, a ball python who has been waiting nearly a year to be adopted.

The Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) says it is reaching capacity, with a mix of corn snakes, ball pythons, a Texas rat snake, and a Nicaraguan dwarf boa all in need of new homes.

According to animal carer Nina Powell, corn snakes are a great option for first-time reptile keepers.

“We do seem to have them for a really long time before they’re rehomed,” she said. “But they’re actually very easy and safe pets — really lovely, gentle animals.”

Among the shelter’s long-term residents is Hades, another ball python described as calm and easy to handle. The team says she would suit a family with older children willing to take a slow, gentle approach to bonding.

Ivy, meanwhile, is known for her shy, peaceful nature. She loves curling up beneath her heated hide and quietly watching the world go by.

For more experienced owners, Noodle, a striking Texas rat snake, could be the perfect match.

The shelter reminds potential adopters that snakes need secure vivariums with the right heating, humidity, and UV lighting. Staff also provide advice on diet, bedding, and enclosure decoration — and encourage adopters to consider second-hand equipment to keep costs down.

“They’re very low-maintenance pets,” Ms Powell added. “You don’t need to take them for walks — they just need the right setup, and they’re fascinating to watch.”

Anyone interested in adopting can contact the JSPCA for more information about the reptiles available for rehoming.
