An animal charity in Jersey is urging pet owners to hand over unwanted animals to its shelter instead of abandoning them outdoors, after three goldfish were discovered dumped in a pond without food or proper shelter.
The Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) said the incident follows another recent case in which a group of guinea pigs were found abandoned along the island’s north coast earlier this month.
The three goldfish were discovered in a pond near La Rue à Don in Grouville, which the charity described as unsuitable for sustaining life. The JSPCA has asked the fish’s owners to come forward.
Head of service delivery Katie Kay explained that a member of the public first noticed the fish and felt they appeared out of place. After assessing the situation, the charity found the pond lacked vegetation, food sources, and adequate shelter, making it an unsafe environment.
“Goldfish like these are usually domestic pets kept in tanks at home,” Kay said. “You wouldn’t expect to see them in a random pond.”
Kay stressed that the charity does not judge owners whose circumstances change and who can no longer care for their pets. However, she encouraged people to bring animals to the JSPCA rather than leaving them somewhere they are unlikely to survive.
“We can find them new homes and ensure they are properly cared for, giving them the best chance of a good life,” she added.
The JSPCA warned that domestic animals abandoned outdoors face serious dangers, including predators and lack of food. In this case, the goldfish had no protection from birds and would likely have starved.
Meanwhile, the guinea pigs discovered earlier this month have yet to be reunited with their owners or placed in new homes, according to the charity.
