Jersey Airport will replace its airfield radar after the system suffered a failure that engineers say cannot be repaired.
Ports of Jersey confirmed the radar, installed in 2012 and originally expected to last into the 2030s, must now be urgently replaced after a year of unsuccessful repair attempts.
Head of airport operations Keith Attwood said flight safety had not been affected, as controllers continue to use other on-island radar sources and data shared with Guernsey. He said the Channel Islands’ network provides “multiple layers of resilience” and full airspace coverage.
A new radar system is already in the planning stages and is expected to be installed in the first half of 2027 as part of a wider upgrade to regional air traffic management. The cost of the replacement has not yet been disclosed.
