Report Calls for Greater Action to Keep Islanders Active
A government review has found that more needs to be done to tackle inactivity and boost the health and wellbeing of Islanders.
The midway update on Jersey’s Inspiring an Active Jersey (IAJ) strategy highlighted progress since its launch in 2020, but said further action was required. The report was prepared by the Government of Jersey in partnership with Jersey Sport.
Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Constable Andy Jehan, acknowledged achievements so far but stressed there was still work ahead.
“We all have a role to play,” he said. “There is a determination to engage Islanders of all ages and backgrounds to reduce inactivity, and this must continue. However, this review has shown the areas where we should focus.”
Looking ahead to 2025–2030, the report sets out priorities to strengthen links between physical activity programmes and the wider sports sector, aiming to create “the best possible offer for sport and physical activity that meets Islanders’ needs.”
Jehan praised the resilience of the Island’s sporting community, noting challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic during the early stages of the strategy. He pointed to the completion of the Oakfield Sports Centre as a “significant milestone” and said the government would continue making the best use of public facilities.
“I am confident that we are on the right track,” he added.
David Kennedy, Chief Executive of Jersey Sport, said the organisation had responded to recommendations made in the Review of Sport and Physical Activity published in November 2023.
He said the review had highlighted a lack of clarity among stakeholders, prompting Jersey Sport to realign its role and priorities.
“Our focus will be on reaching those who are least active, removing barriers to participation, and continuing to support the voluntary sports sector that plays such a vital role in Island life,” he said.
