Jersey Unveils £110m Plan to Transform Fort Regent
Jersey’s government has announced ambitious new plans to redevelop Fort Regent, aiming to turn it into a modern leisure destination with a £110 million investment. The vision, led by the Jersey Development Company (JDC), is to create a vibrant space for socializing, entertainment, and recreation, with a strong focus on facilities for children and young adults.
Major New Attractions
The proposed transformation includes a 2,500-seat theatre, a 12-lane bowling alley, and a six-screen cinema, which would be relocated from the waterfront. Additional attractions include a play area, virtual golf, e-gaming zones, and climbing facilities, along with restaurants and cafés.
Outdoor plans feature a rooftop bar and restaurant, a skate park, BMX track, a 500-metre running track, and a dedicated space for teenagers. The redevelopment would also bring back landscaped gardens and the much-loved Fort Regent cable cars.
A new hotel could also be built on the site of the former swimming pool, pending planning approval and private investment.
Public Consultation and Feedback
Islanders are being invited to have their say on the plans, with an independent survey open until 18 May. Additionally, a public presentation will be held at the Pomme d’Or Hotel on 22 April, giving residents the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. The JDC is also engaging with younger islanders by visiting secondary schools to gather opinions from under-18s.
Leadership Support and Timeline
Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Farnham called the redevelopment "ambitious" and "long overdue," emphasizing its potential to become a vibrant social hub at the heart of island life. Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan also expressed enthusiasm for the plans, highlighting their affordability compared to previous proposals.
"This is a much more reasonable plan than we've seen three or four years ago," he said. "Earlier plans were almost £300m—closer to £400m in today's figures. This is about a quarter of that cost but still offers a lot for the community."
Fort Regent is set to be cleared by the end of December 2025, with construction expected to start in early 2026. The redevelopment is projected to be completed by December 2028.
