Jersey has just recorded its hottest May on record, according to the Met Office, marking an unprecedented period of warmth for the island.

The forecaster reported that temperatures were significantly above average, describing “unprecedented heat” with several records surpassed during the month. Overall, conditions were 0.7°C higher than the previous May record, underlining the scale of the anomaly.

The island’s average temperature for the month reached 16.5°C, while the peak day saw thermometers climb to 34.2°C on 26 May. That figure now stands as the highest temperature ever recorded in either May or June in Jersey, with weather records dating back to 1894.

In addition to the extreme May heat, the Met Office also noted a five-day heatwave stretching from 24 to 28 June, which it described as the earliest heatwave recorded in any year.

The findings highlight an exceptional spell of early-season warmth for Jersey, with multiple temperature records broken in quick succession.
