A long-serving employee has received more than £145,000 in compensation after being dismissed without warning when his construction firm abruptly shut its doors.

Stephen Romeril, who dedicated just under 50 years to AC Mauger & Son Limited, lost his job on 14 August when the company’s owner, Jersey’s Style Group, suddenly ceased trading.

Appearing before the Jersey Employment and Discrimination Tribunal, Mr Romeril said he had been left unpaid for notice, holiday entitlement and outstanding wages. With the firm now in liquidation, the appointed joint liquidators chose not to contest his claim.

The tribunal awarded him £87,819 for unfair dismissal, £23,418 in statutory notice, and £3,903 in holiday pay. A further £30,000 was granted for breaches of his enhanced contractual terms, including unpaid salary.

The collapse of the Style Group has already prompted other claims. Earlier this year, two accounts administrators who collectively spent 65 years with the business were awarded £100,000 after losing their jobs when the group folded.
