Channel Islands Welcome Post-Brexit UK-EU Deal

Senior politicians in Jersey and Guernsey have welcomed the UK’s new agreement with the EU, calling it a positive step toward easing post-Brexit trade and travel friction.

The "reset deal," announced by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, aims to simplify food exports, reduce travel delays, and reintroduce pet passports. A proposed youth mobility scheme could also allow 18 to 30-year-olds to work, study, or volunteer in Europe again.

Jersey’s External Relations Minister, Deputy Ian Gorst, said the deal could significantly reduce red tape for exporters and fishermen, especially if sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are agreed upon.

Fishing rights for EU vessels remain a contentious issue in the UK but do not affect Jersey due to separate arrangements under the original Brexit deal.

Gorst also welcomed the potential rollout of UK passport access to EU eGates and said reviving youth exchanges could help address staffing issues and rebuild ties with Europe.
