Underweight Seal Pups Rescued on Jersey Coastline
Two young seals rescued in Jersey are receiving specialist care after being found underweight and dehydrated, according to a marine life charity.
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said it was called to two separate incidents on Saturday involving stranded pups.
The first seal, a female weighing just 16kg (35lb), was discovered at St Catherine. The second, a 15kg (33lb) male, was found at L’Etacq after struggling to make its way back to the sea over rocky terrain.
Both animals were described as severely underweight — less than half the healthy weight required to survive independently in the wild, which is around 30kg (66lb), BDMLR said.
“Neither would have survived on their own at that size,” a spokesperson for the charity explained.
The female pup was also found with minor wounds and covered in flies.
The pair were transported to New Era Vets, where they are being rehydrated and monitored while plans are made for their rehabilitation.
BDMLR thanked members of the public who reported the sightings and praised the St Catherine RNLI crew for assisting with the rescue of the female pup.
