Jersey Regulator Probes Island’s Telecom Security

Jersey’s competition watchdog has launched a review of the island’s telecommunications systems amid moves to strengthen security and reliability standards.

The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) is consulting on new guidance for local telecom operators, following concerns raised by the government. Ministers are drawing up legislation aimed at safeguarding networks and ensuring services remain dependable, with the regulator keeping a close watch on compliance.

Tim Ringsdore, JCRA’s chief executive, described the review as “an important step” towards providing “the most secure and reliable telecommunications possible” for the island.

“Few of us can manage without communications in some form,” he said. “Given the increasingly turbulent and threatening world beyond our shores, it’s vital that our networks remain resilient. Islanders already benefit from high-quality services, but the government’s new laws will ensure providers keep pushing to improve security and reliability.”

Mr Ringsdore added that the authority is working hand-in-hand with ministers to assess emerging threats and identify necessary protections.

Islanders are invited to share their views in a public consultation, which closes on Monday, 17 October.
