Taxis and Buses Banned from Key Town Centre Route in Pedestrian Priority Trial
Taxis and buses will be barred from using New Street and New Cut as part of a 12-month trial aimed at prioritising pedestrian safety in Jersey’s town centre.
Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet has confirmed that access across King Street will be restricted for public transport for at least a year, starting soon.
The decision follows a recent traffic survey which showed that, during peak shopping hours (10am to 4pm), taxis made up around 50% of traffic using the route, with buses accounting for 8%.
“Removing taxi access southbound from New Street to Library Place and rerouting buses will support pedestrian safety and reduce congestion,” the government said in a statement.
Under the new rules, only pedal cycles and essential deliveries to shops—permitted between 8pm and 10am—will be allowed through the area. The Library Place taxi rank will remain in use.
