Survey Finds Strong Support for St Helier Waterfront Overhaul
Almost 75% of those surveyed about the plans to transform St Helier's waterfront have expressed their approval, a recent survey reveals.
The study, conducted by research agency 4insight, saw 2,190 participants weigh in on the proposals put forward by Jersey Development Company (JDC). Among the respondents, 71% indicated satisfaction with the plans, with young people aged 16–34 showing the strongest approval, at 80%.
4insight highlighted that the survey was "statistically robust and representative," ensuring a broad cross-section of the community was engaged, including underrepresented groups like young people and the Portuguese community.
One notable finding was that 95% of participants voiced their desire for better connections between the town and the waterfront. Similarly, 88% of respondents emphasised the importance of maintaining unobstructed views between new waterfront developments and the coast.
Aerial images provided by JDC showed the proposed changes, including redesigned public spaces and new amenities. The first phase of the plans includes a revamped Les Jardins de La Mer, a children’s water play area, and an outdoor swimming pool equipped with eight lanes for swimming and water polo, complemented by a café, sauna, and changing facilities.
Young islanders were particularly excited about the addition of sports facilities, with 60% of those under 25 believing the plans would boost tourism. JDC noted the strong potential to attract younger visitors to the island as part of the development.
The survey also revealed keen interest in proposed amenities, with 88% of respondents saying they would frequent food and drink outlets, 77% showing interest in a cinema, and 64% eager to visit the public gardens.
JDC's Chief Executive, Lee Henry, expressed delight at the results, stating: "We are thrilled to see such strong community backing for the waterfront redevelopment proposals."
