A new survey has revealed that more than 90% of residents across the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man support measures to help schools prevent vaping on their grounds.
The study, carried out by Island Global Research, gathered views from 1,330 people in Jersey, 1,451 in Guernsey, and 1,468 in the Isle of Man. The research aimed to better understand public attitudes towards tobacco and vaping, as well as perceptions of their wider social impact.
According to the findings, younger adults aged 18 to 39 were the most likely to view smoking and vaping as acceptable behaviours. Respondents in this age group were also less concerned about the community effects of such habits.
By contrast, older participants were more critical of vaping in public spaces. While a majority of younger respondents said vaping outdoors was “socially acceptable,” only around a quarter of those aged over 65 agreed.
Researchers said the survey formed part of a broader examination of attitudes toward substance use across the Crown dependencies. Island Global Research added that further analysis would be undertaken to explore how public perceptions differ between age groups and islands.
