Jersey Students Struggle to Find Summer Work
A Jersey student has spoken of her frustration after applying for around 50 summer jobs without success.
Georgie Smith, studying chemistry at Cardiff University, said the lack of responses was “disheartening.” She eventually secured an interview but said many students faced the same struggle, with employers often favouring full-time or permanent staff.
UK hospitality data suggests businesses are reluctant to hire seasonal workers due to rising costs, while the number of students available for summer work has dropped by 25%.
Local café owner Jules Barons said students remained vital to her business but admitted high wages — including up to £26 per hour on bank holidays — were a challenge for the hospitality sector.
Skills Jersey said it encouraged students to start work placements early to build experience, with over 250 young people securing roles in 2023-24 that could lead to seasonal jobs.
