Stores to Close Early as Storm Goretti Brings High Winds

Several major retailers, including the Co-op & Waitrose, have announced early closures today in response to Storm Goretti, which is forecast to bring strong winds and hazardous conditions to the area.

The decision follows confirmation from airport authorities that flights will be scaled back and terminals will close earlier than planned as a safety precaution. With high winds expected to intensify throughout the afternoon and evening, businesses say the move is aimed at protecting staff and customers.

“Out of an abundance of caution”

A spokesperson for the Co-op said the company made the decision “out of an abundance of caution,” adding that stores will shut earlier than usual to allow employees to travel home safely before conditions worsen.

Other retailers and local businesses are expected to follow suit, and residents are being advised to check individual store hours before heading out. Public transport operators have also warned of potential delays and cancellations as the storm moves in.

Meteorological services have warned that Storm Goretti could bring gusts strong enough to cause travel disruption, fallen trees, and power outages. Authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary journeys and to secure loose items around homes.

Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
