A seven-year-old girl has been hailed as “incredible” after raising £2,500 to support families facing food poverty.

Ophelia has spent the past 18 months helping the Jersey-based charity Caring Cooks, which works to ensure no child or family goes hungry by providing meals, donations, and food education.

The young fundraiser has given up her birthday money, organised events, and led her own fundraising initiatives.

Yvonne Corbin, from Caring Cooks, praised her efforts, saying Ophelia has “brought awareness to how important charity work is” among other children.

She recalled being moved when Ophelia’s mother first approached her: “Her little girl wanted to donate her birthday money to the charity, and everything since has been off her own back. She comes up with her own ideas.”

Ms Corbin added: “Ophelia has brought life to the charity because she’s encouraged children to get involved in our work. She’s just adorable.”

Ophelia’s father, Adrian Goldsborough, who has helped teach her how to cook, said her contribution has been remarkable. “It’s been fantastic. I don’t think Ophelia fully understands how much her actions have helped so many. Hopefully her example will inspire other children to support charities like Caring Cooks.”

Ophelia has now been shortlisted for the BBC Radio Jersey Make a Difference Awards, with winners to be announced on Friday.

Speaking about her work, she said: “It makes me happy because I’m helping other people. I want to keep doing it so other people will too.”

Would you like me to keep the descriptive photo captions from the original (about the kitchen settings and what people were wearing), or would you prefer the rewrite to read more like a polished newspaper piece without them?
