Rouge Bouillon Pupils Lead Campaign to Boost Cycle Helmet Safety

Pupils at Rouge Bouillon Primary School are leading a campaign to encourage more children to wear cycle helmets after discovering some classmates were riding without them.

The school's council, made up of children aged four to 11, worked with local businesses to provide subsidised helmets for just £5. Under Jersey law, all cyclists under the age of 14 must wear a helmet.

The initiative has already seen 86 discounted helmets sold. After surveying pupils, the children found that cost was one of the main reasons some families did not own one.

St Helier Constable Inna Gardiner praised the pupils after inviting them to the Town Hall to present their ideas. She described their recommendations as "really great" and said they would be discussed with the Education Minister, while encouraging other schools to follow Rouge Bouillon's example.

The project has also been supported by Headway Jersey, which hopes the campaign will help create a culture where wearing a helmet becomes as routine as fastening a seatbelt.
