Columbus Replica Ship Docks in Jersey on European Tour
A full-scale replica of Christopher Columbus’s famed flagship, the Santa María, has docked in Jersey for the first time and is now open to visitors at Albert Pier.
Built in Spain in 2018 by the Nao Victoria Foundation, the vessel forms part of a European tour that includes stops in the UK, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. Described as a floating museum, the replica showcases Spain’s maritime history and offers a glimpse into life aboard a 15th-century ship.
The foundation said the ship is a faithful reproduction of the original 1492 vessel, featuring four masts, five sails, and five decks. Weighing 180 tonnes and stretching 29 metres long, the ship allows visitors to explore the conditions sailors once endured.
The original Santa María was the largest of the three ships used during Columbus's first Atlantic voyage. It sank off the coast of Haiti on Christmas Day in 1492.
The Nao Santa María will remain open to the public in Jersey until 8:30pm on Sunday.
