The Jersey Opera House, closed since 2020, will remain shuttered until autumn 2025, extending its closure to five and a half years. The reopening, previously scheduled for spring 2025, has been delayed to accommodate further enhancements to the iconic venue.
Enhancements for Excellence
Interim Theatre Director Andy Eagle explained the delay is due to the need for additional upgrades:
“It’s important to ensure the theatre is fit for purpose, meeting the expectations of audiences and participants,” he said. “We’re incorporating improvements to the lighting and stage areas to attract top UK shows and better serve the local community. While it means waiting a bit longer, the result will be worth it.”
Restoration Milestone
Major restoration work, led by Ashbe Construction, is set to conclude by Christmas Eve 2023, when the keys will be handed back to theatre management. Safety concerns initially prevented the venue from reopening after its closure during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The £12.7 million restoration has included significant environmental upgrades, such as modernising mechanical and electrical systems to decarbonise the building. Ben Cairney of Ashbe Construction highlighted the sustainability focus:
“We’ve replaced the power main, upgraded all lighting, and renewed ventilation and plumbing systems. These changes move the theatre toward a more sustainable future.”
