Red Safety Stripe on Jersey Lane Divides Opinion

A bright red stripe painted along two rural lanes in Grouville, Jersey, has sparked backlash from residents who say it clashes with the countryside's natural charm.

The marking, part of a road safety initiative near Grouville School, aims to separate pedestrians from vehicles. But locals have called it an "eyesore" and "a monstrosity," arguing it disrupts the area’s visual appeal.

“It’s a beautiful walking lane,” said resident Gerald Fletcher. “Why spoil it with something so harsh and urban?”

Hundreds of social media users have echoed the criticism, though some parents have welcomed the change, praising the stripe’s visibility and role in keeping children safe.

Parish constable Mark Labey defended the choice of red over a sandy yellow, citing its effectiveness as a warning colour. “Safety is the priority,” he said.

The move follows a 2022 government recommendation to improve pedestrian markings near schools. Despite mixed reactions, the parish says the aim is to enhance safety without compromising the area’s character.
