Safety Upgrades Planned for St Aubin’s Tunnels to Secure Tenants’ Future
Plans have been submitted to improve safety at the former railway tunnels in St Aubin, allowing long-term tenants – including two shooting clubs and the Le Petit Train – to remain on site.
The proposal includes installing fire screens, fire doors and security gates to bring the tunnels up to safety standards.
The move follows earlier concerns that tenants might have to relocate amid safety risks, prompting a petition by the St Brelade’s Smallbore Rifle Club.
A letter from Jersey Property Holdings said closing the tunnels was “not desirable” as it would hasten deterioration of the listed structure. It added that the tenants, who provide community and tourism benefits, could not easily be rehoused elsewhere.
The upgrades are described as the “preferred option” to ensure a safe and sustainable future for both the users and the historic tunnels.
Constable Andy Jehan said he was pleased that, subject to planning approval, the government could now “crack on” with the work, adding he was “thrilled” the clubs could stay.
