The States of Jersey Prison Service has introduced a new eight-week football coaching programme in partnership with Jersey Bulls coach Paul McKay, aimed at supporting rehabilitation and personal development among inmates.
Twelve selected prisoners will take part in the initiative, working towards a nationally recognised Level 1 football coaching qualification. The course forms part of the Twinning Project and will be delivered by the prison’s Physical Education Department.
The programme is designed to build confidence, encourage discipline, and promote teamwork through structured coaching sessions and practical learning.
Paul McKay, a former player who will lead coaching sessions on behalf of Jersey Bulls, highlighted the positive role sport can play in rehabilitation.
“Football has a unique ability to engage, inspire and create opportunity,” he said. “This initiative demonstrates how the game can support education, rehabilitation and personal growth.
“We are delighted to support a project that we hope will have a lasting and meaningful impact. I look forward to delivering the course and hope it can have a positive impact on all the participants.”
The programme has been made possible with support from St Brelade’s Church, which helped bring the initiative to life.
