Plans Submitted to Expand St Peter M&S Store and Improve Local Amenities

The M&S Simply Food store in St Peter could nearly double its retail space under new plans submitted for approval.

The proposal would see the store on Grande Route de Saint-Pierre increase in size from 374 square metres to 706 square metres. The scheme also includes the addition of 12 parking spaces and enhanced facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

According to planning documents submitted by SandpiperCI and Axis Mason, the expansion would be accommodated within the existing building, formerly used as a car showroom. The applicants argue that the project would reinforce St Peter’s role as a local service hub by allowing residents to access a wider range of everyday goods closer to home, reducing the need to travel into St Helier.

The application states that the current store layout restricts the installation of modern refrigeration equipment and limits the range of fresh produce and other products that can be stocked. The proposed extension would address these constraints and improve the overall shopping experience.

As part of the wider redevelopment, plans include upgraded pedestrian and cycle routes through the site, alongside eight additional bicycle parking spaces.

Developers say they have already undertaken community consultation, including an in-store information display and an online survey. Planning documents report that feedback levels were low but generally positive, with respondents highlighting the potential benefits of increased retail space, improved accessibility and additional parking.

The proposal also features a public art installation designed to mark the site’s historic field boundary. The artwork is intended to provide a subtle reminder of the area’s heritage and create an attractive feature for visitors approaching the store on foot.
