Plans have been submitted to develop a new art and food technology studio within the grounds of St George’s Preparatory School at La Hague Manor.
The proposal involves building a detached teaching studio and related facilities within the estate of the Grade II listed manor house that forms part of the school campus.
In its planning application, the school has requested permission for the building to be constructed to the south-east of the manor.
A design statement accompanying the submission explains that the proposed location lies within the wider school estate, which stretches eastwards into St Peter’s Valley.
The document notes that the chosen site already contains a disused ground-bearing concrete slab, formerly used as the base for three cricket practice net bays. Because of this, the area is described as “previously developed” under planning definitions.
If permission is granted, the project would deliver a teaching studio with a floor area of 100.35 square metres. The space would be dedicated to art and food technology lessons, providing specialist facilities for pupils.
Design documents state that the building is intended to function as a multi-purpose classroom set within the school’s woodland surroundings. Large openings are expected to allow natural light into the space while offering views across the arboretum.
“Forest schooling”
The report also suggests the studio could support outdoor learning by offering nearby indoor facilities, enabling lessons to take place away from the main school buildings.
Architecturally, the structure has been designed to have a minimal impact on the landscape. Plans indicate the use of natural timber cladding so the building blends with the surrounding woodland.
The site sits close to an area used by the school for “forest schooling”, where pupils take part in activities focused on learning in a natural environment.
The application has been categorised as a minor development and is currently under review by the Planning Department.
