Plans for a new hotel at Strive in St Peter have been unanimously approved by the Planning Committee following a lengthy and challenging approval process.
The decision comes after revised proposals were submitted, addressing concerns raised during nearly a year of applications and earlier refusals. The updated design features a smaller building with up to 155 bedrooms, while still including a conference centre and spa.
The hotel and health club project was first introduced last August but faced rejection in November due to its scale. The original £55 million proposal included 179 bedrooms along with a spa, swimming pool, and conference facilities. Despite backing from several local organisations, including business and tourism groups, the development was deemed overly dominant and potentially damaging to the surrounding countryside.
Further revisions were made earlier this year, although the removal of planned all-weather training facilities drew criticism from the government’s Cabinet Office, which argued it weakened the overall proposal.
Despite these concerns, the Planning Committee has now given full approval, with all six members voting in favour of the development.
