Park Toilet Closure Sparks Accessibility Concerns and Public Frustration in St Helier

A prolonged closure of the men’s public toilets at a park in St Helier is prompting complaints from residents, who say the situation is forcing men into women’s facilities and creating particular challenges for those with disabilities.

The toilets, located beside a children’s playground in Parade Gardens, have been out of service for several weeks due to what officials describe as a maintenance problem.

The owner of a nearby café said he has faced frustration from members of the public, despite having no responsibility for the facilities. He noted that some fathers have had little choice but to accompany their children into the women’s toilets, occasionally drawing disapproving reactions from others.

“It disrupts our work,” he said. “People assume it’s our issue and direct their complaints at us, but we don’t manage the toilets.”

The closure is also raising concerns among disability advocates. A local campaigner described the situation as “far from ideal,” highlighting that the affected block includes accessible and baby-changing facilities that are in high demand.

He added that alternatives are not always practical, as some nearby accessible toilets require special access keys, making them difficult to use in urgent situations.

Parents using the park have also voiced unease. One mother said the lack of available facilities is especially problematic for those with young children who may need frequent toilet access or changing space.

“It’s not a great situation,” she said. “And having men use the women’s toilets creates an uncomfortable dynamic. Ideally, facilities should remain separate.”

Another park visitor described the closure as inconvenient, particularly given the high number of families who use the playground daily. He argued that repairs should be prioritised to meet demand.

Local authorities confirmed the closure is due to a fault with the door lock and said efforts are ongoing to source a replacement part, though supply issues have caused delays. They added that the women’s toilets, which include accessible amenities, remain open.

Officials said they are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible and apologised for the disruption caused.
